Cocos and Malpelo Islands of the sharks With Dr. Alex Antoniou, Shark Research Institute's Dir. of Field Ops; and Amos Nachoum, Director of BigAnimals Expeditions "My view from the extreme left to the far right was completely filled with bodies of sharks, swimming, parading carelessly along the wall swinging their tail and hammer like head from left to right ever so slowly like they were deliberately parading in front of our eyes and cameras. It was one of the most electrifying moments in my 40 years of diving." “We are proud and thrilled to share with you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dive with, and be in the company of Dr. Alex Antoniou, Shark Research Institute's Director of Field Operations and Amos Nachoum, the wildlife photographer and Director of BigAnimals Expeditions. These two men have forged a dynamic team that will greatly enrich your diving experience in the fields of research, photography, and BigAnimals Expeditions.
Cocos, the legendary desert island of Robinson Crusoe, and remote Malpelo Island, 200 miles plus off the coast of Colombia, are world-renowned for the electrifying beauty of their blue-water diving. These islands offer an opportunity to dive with the never-ending schools of hammerhead sharks, the occasional whale shark, hundreds of white-tip sharks and enormous bait balls. Both expeditions will have the unique ability to dive in rotation in one of the new submarines on board that provide a rare chance to engage in undersea exploration to 1500 feet deep! Dr. Alex Antoniou has been monitoring the movement of hammerhead sharks using radio telemetry and deploying satellite tags on whale sharks at Cocos Island for more than a year. Alex will engage us in active tagging and educate us on counting methods for aquatic wildlife. Guests will have the opportunity to be participating in an official research operation. Amos Nachoum immigrated to the USA from Israel in late '70, after four years of circumnavigating the globe as a skipper and a researcher; he landed in the USA to pursue his passion for wildlife photography. In the past 20 years, Amos has specialized in the wildlife photography of BigAnimals: sharks, whales, dolphins and polar bears.
"All of my photography productions and expeditions are designed to raise public awareness and dispel the myths about wildlife," says Amos. "We foster respect and concern for aquatic wildlife and strive to advance their protection before we reach the point of no return." Today, Amos is considered the "Ambassador of BigAnimals". Alex and Amos are strong advocates of marine education and conserv
ation, and will be diving and sharing their vast and amazing life experiences on a daily basis with us. Each expert will lead an evening presentation on board during the voyage and when the two ships are together in Cocos, all the guests from the two ships and the experts will get together for joint conferences and presentations from the speakers. To accommodate this one-of-a-kind diving event, two vessels have been chartered, the "Undersea Hunter" and the "Sea Hunter". One of these vessels, the "Undersea Hunter" is equipped with one, two-person submarine. These vessels are considered two of the world's finest live-aboard dive boats and have earned their reputation of providing outstanding dive services.
This promises to be a most dynamic expedition due to the locations, timing and the availability of the submarine. It will also be a rewarding and inspiring opportunity to become acquainted with Dr. Antoniou and Amos as they are both dedicated to share with you their skills, and coach the interested party in real time research, the art of photography, BigAnimals and action photography.
Last but not least, The Hunters operation provides the most unique submarine dives on a remote location. With prior reservation, guest have the privilege to quench their thirst for adventure and take the sub to 300 feet and as deep as 1500 feet. Who knows what you are going to see at Malpelo and Cocos... only if you participate. What are you waiting for?” - Amos Nachoum
